Roxy Music – Pyjamarama

So here’s my first choice. It’s here because firstly I love it and secondly I realised about a year ago (after listening to it for 40 or so years) it is barely a song, it’s just intro, verse, break, verse, break outro. No Chorus or middle 8 or anything and yet I never get tired of it.

There’s also a great slower, funkier version on German TV programme Musikladen available on YouTube. See below. Bry dressing as Humphrey Bogart must have seemed pretty wild in 1974. There’ll be more Roxy Music on this page I can assure you.

Red Lady - Chris Cordell

Here’s a sixties obscurity. There’ll be plenty of these to come as for the last 20 years or so I think half the stuff I’ve bought has been sixties obscurities compilations. This is Red Lady by Chris Cordell and is from the first of the Fading Yellow series of which, obviously, I have all 21 volumes released so far. The first one is the best (well, so far) and well worth seeking out if you like…er.. slightly melancholic psychedelic pop I guess. Anyway this was unbelievably a B side. Described by someone as ‘man drunk in charge of a sitar’. I will say no more.

Complete Control - The Clash

This is the best Clash record isn’t it? Miles away from Should I Stay or Should I go and I Fought the bloody Law that you always seem to hear. They manage to make whining about your record label sound dangerous and exciting. And one of the most powerful endings ever. Contains the immortal ‘You’re my guitar hero’ which along with ‘Let’s get out of this facking city’ and ‘This is rock’n’roll, it ain’t fighting’ from Rude Boy can be used in conversation almost on a daily basis.
